Sigala
Saying it’s been an eventful few months for newcomer Sigala would be an understatement, his single is already gaining massive support across radio and seems to be no signs of slowing down as the young artist is busy in the studio working on future hits as we speak.
Sigala boasts an impressive musical background, starting out as an avid piano player from the age of 8, achieving grade 8 only a few years later. He progressed into Jazz music as a teenager before studying at Westminster University, here he was able to fine-tune his technical abilities and style. As he got marginally older, he discovered a love for dance music listening to the likes of Pendulum, Sub Focus, Fatboy Slim and The Prodigy. It was these artists combined with 90s music (particularly R’n’B and Garage) that would go on to influence his own music and sound.
After he finished university, the allure of playing gigs in unsigned bands on the toilet circuit was beginning to wear off and Sigala found himself wanting to be in the studio, writing and producing more and more for others. Fast-forward a mere eight months later and Sigala’s ascent found him at Tileyard Studios, surrounded by all those artists that he adored as a student who are all residents there (Pendulum + Sub Focus). It was when he was asked to do a 37th mix for a well-known artist that he decided to make a life change. Tired and frustrated he reached for a six-pack of Desperados (a tequila flavoured beer) and he turned on his computer to download an acappella of the Jackson 5’s ‘ABC’. It was then that the monster ‘Easy Love’ was born. Within a few days it had been picked up by Ministry of Sound.
‘Easy Love’ – is set to be the feel-good anthem of the summer. His music can only be summed up as uplifting and soulful while tapping into that 90s nostalgia that is so definitive of the young producer’s generation. Piano based instrumentals and jazz chords are still evident throughout, showing that his technical background lends itself generously to his present sound.
As if working on his own projects wasn’t enough, he is still writing songs for other artists and has recently been working with the likes Felix Jaehn as well as Ella Eyre on her upcoming single ‘Good Times’. Crediting his song writing roots, he explains, “I have definitely come out of the other side with a new perspective on dance music in the sense that I now approach it as more of a song. I definitely have my song writing cap on when I’m producing dance music.”
Sigala has no doubt made some momentous strides in the past few months but he is quick to admit that he still has a long way to go. However, with his sky-high ambition and perseverance, it looks like he’s only just getting started
